I have to admit that I really don’t pay any attention to song lyrics or look for meaning in songs. I found Rihanna’s S&M to be an upbeat, catchy song, and it was weeks of hearing it on the radio before I realized that S&M was about S&M. Even the egregiously-sexual lyrics didn’t tip me off. I was just obviously.
More absurdly, someone recently pointed out what Aqualung appears to be about. With a sheepish grin, I admitted that I had never paid it any attention and had always just assumed it was about a man in an iron lung. It’s not so much that I’m absurdly naive, as that I just don’t give song lyrics much thought.
I keep hearing Pumped Up Kicks on the radio, and decided I should buy it. Lately I’ve really been liking chill, whimsical, and upbeat songs like Love Generation and Michael Franti, and Pumped Up Kicks sounded like it would fit right in.
I couldn’t really make out the mumbled lyrics, so I went to look them up, wondering if it was literally about pump-up shoes, like Air Force Ones, or if the lyrics were less-literally about shoes.
I should have paid attention to the lyrics before deciding it should go in my playlist of fun, uplifting songs.
